Things to keep in mind: Get as many noble companions as you can that are happy with each-other. Increase right to rule as much as possible. Gain honor by refusing quest rewards. Have atleast 250k before rebelling. There you go, that should help you in pretty much 2/3 of the game in your first playthrough. This often leads to your companions army being destroyed. Companion parties can be a good way to collect a garrison. Let them wander off and recruit, call them back into your army. And the talk to them > let me inspect your troops > take what you want and put them in the garrison. Then dismiss your companion from your army and let them again go

The more odds you stack against you the more renown you earn. Keep in mind the more renown you have the harder it is to accumulate. Dont fight to earn prestige fight to level up. Fight when youre outnembered by a lot and your prestige/renown will grow a lot. My latest playthrough have atleast 2000 renown by fighting a lot. 1 more thing you can do is war on city rebels.
