A funny thing about the Harry Potter series is the treatment Rowling does of werewolves. From book 3 onwards we meet Lupin and Greyback, and we learn that werewolves are regular human beings, perfectly able to coexist with the rest of the wizards, but they live isolated in packs because society rejects them. According to the article on Wizarding World Slytherin descendents knew about the Chamber of Secrets. The Gaunts are he's descendets and they were not as discreet as they were supposed to be. Whispers that a monster lived in the depths of the castle were also prevalent for centuries.
Chamber of Secrets sounds much better and more intriguing than "The Secret Chamber". I think “secrets” refer to all the mysterious deaths & happenings that went on during the events of the chamber being re-opened. I think its the idea that a chamber exists, that noones ever found, and the contents of which nobody knows.
